# Book a Theory Test

How to book your DVSA theory test, what it costs, what you need and what happens on the day.

To book a theory test in Great Britain you use the official DVSA booking service at [gov.uk/book-theory-test](https://www.gov.uk/book-theory-test). It costs **£23** for a car theory test, takes about five minutes, and all you need is your provisional driving licence number, an email address and a debit or credit card.

The driving theory test is the first of the two tests you have to pass before you can drive on your own. It is made up of a multiple-choice section and a hazard perception section, and you have to pass both parts on the same visit. Once you have passed, you can book your practical driving test — and that is where the real waiting normally starts.

## How to Book a Theory Test Online

The whole process is done through the DVSA booking service. Here is exactly what happens, step by step.

1. 1

Go to the official DVSA booking service

Start at gov.uk/book-theory-test. This is the only official route for car theory tests in England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland learners book through nidirect.

2. 2

    Choose the type of test

Select 'car' for a standard driving theory test. There are separate options for motorcycles, lorries, buses and instructor tests.

3. 3

    Enter your provisional licence number

You will find it on the front of your provisional photocard licence. You must have a valid provisional licence before you can book.

4. 4

Pick a theory test centre and a date

Search by postcode to see the centres nearest to you. Compare a few — a centre 20 minutes further away often has much earlier availability.

5. 5

    Pay the £23 fee

Pay by debit or credit card. Booking direct means you pay the DVSA fee and nothing else.

6. 6

    Check your confirmation email

You will get an email with your booking reference, date, time and centre address. Keep it — you will need the reference to change or cancel the test.

You can also book a theory test over the phone on 0300 200 1122, Monday to Friday. You will need the same information either way.

## What You Need to Book Your Theory Test

Your provisional licence number

A valid UK provisional driving licence is required to book. You can apply for one from the age of 15 years and 9 months.

A debit or credit card

The £23 fee is taken at the point of booking. Booking direct with the DVSA means no booking agent fees on top.

An email address

Your confirmation, booking reference and any reminders are all sent by email.

## How Much Does a Theory Test Cost?

A car theory test costs **£23**. That is the fee the DVSA charges and it is the same at every test centre in England, Scotland and Wales. Motorcycle theory tests also cost £23, while lorry and bus theory tests are split into two parts and priced separately.

Be careful where you book. A large number of unofficial websites rank for theory test booking and charge £40, £60 or more for exactly the same test, simply by filling in the DVSA form on your behalf. If the price you are being quoted is not £23, you are not on the official service. The current fees are always listed on [gov.uk](https://www.gov.uk/driving-theory-test-cost).

## How Long Does It Take to Get a Theory Test?

Booking takes minutes, but availability varies a lot by area. In quieter parts of the country you can often find a theory test slot within a week or two. In busy towns and cities the next free appointment can be a month or more away.

Two things reliably get you an earlier date:

- **Widen your search.** Check two or three centres near you rather than only the closest one. Theory test centres are in ordinary office buildings, so the location makes no difference to the test itself.
- **Check back regularly.** People move and cancel theory tests constantly, and those slots go straight back into the system.

## What Happens on the Day

Arrive about 15 minutes early and bring your **photocard provisional driving licence**. Without it you will not be allowed to sit the test and you will lose the fee. Phones, bags and watches go in a locker before you start.

The test has two parts, taken back to back:

- **Multiple choice** — 50 questions in 57 minutes. You need 43 correct to pass. There is a practice session first and you can flag questions to come back to.
- **Hazard perception** — 14 video clips containing 15 developing hazards. You click when you spot one, and you need 44 points out of 75 to pass.

You have to pass both parts in the same sitting. If you pass one and fail the other, you retake the whole test. Your result is printed and handed to you before you leave, along with your **theory test pass certificate number**, which is valid for two years.

The best preparation is repetition on the real question bank — you can work through our [free theory mock tests](/theory-test) as many times as you like before the day.

## Booking Your Practical Test After the Theory Test

As soon as you have your theory certificate number you can book your practical driving test at [gov.uk/book-driving-test](https://www.gov.uk/book-driving-test). This is where most learners get stuck: practical test waiting times run to several months at many [driving test centres](/test-centres), so the date you are first offered is rarely the earliest one you could get.

Cancellations are released around the clock, and that is what we do. Driving Test Cancellations searches the DVSA system thousands of times a day across up to three test centres of your choice and alerts you the moment an earlier slot appears — with the option to book it for you automatically. Learners regularly move their test forward by weeks or months.
